Causative Verbs

Make, have, and get can be used to express the idea that “A” causes “B” to do something.

Examples:
1. I made Dimas carry my bag.
2. I had Adhi carry my bag.
3. I got Yudha to carry my bag.


                a.   Causative make is followed by simple form and it gives the idea that “A” forces “B” to do something.
                        Form:
“A” + makes + “B” + simple form (Verb 1)

Examples:
1. My Mom made me do my homework.
2. My brother always makes me clean my room.

                b.   Causative have is followed by simple form and it gives the idea that “A” requests “B” to do something.
                        Form:
“A” + has + “B” + simple form (Verb 1)


                        Examples:
1. Bayu had the waiter bring him some tea.
2. Zen had me do his assignment.


                c.   Causative get is followed by an infinitive. Get gives the idea that “A” persuades “B” to do something.
                        Form:
“A” + gets + “B” + to infinitive (to + Verb 1)

                        Examples:
1. Nawawi got Affan to play soccer with him after school.
2. Haris got me to treat him lunch.

                d.    The past participle or Verb 3 is used after have and get to give a passive meaning.
                        Form:
                        “A” + get/have + Object + Verb 3

                        Examples:
1. I had my watch repaired (by someone).
2. I got my watch repaired (by someone).
